The Leibniz Institute for Farm Animal Biology (FBN) is a foundation under public law and member of the Leibniz Association. About 300 employees are performing basic and applied research in the field of the biology of farm animals. The Institute provides an interdisciplinary research environment and excellent experimental and analytical facilities. The Institute of Genome Biology invites applications for a three year fixed-term PhD student position (m/f/d) at the level of 50% of salary grade 13 TV-L starting as soon as possible

2019-36 the position is part of the research project "phosphorus as a metabolic regulator during environmental stress in animals" supported by the leibniz sciencecampus phosphorus research rostock. the position involves a close collaboration between the institute of genome biology of the leibniz fbn and the department of marine biology of the university of rostock task description:

this project aims to investigate the physiological and molecular mechanisms of the mitochondrial tolerance to hypoxia-reoxygenation (h/r) stress such as occurs during oxygen fluctuations in coastal marine environments or during ischemia-reperfusion in animals. the successful candidate will combine molecular (proteomic and/or transcriptomic), biochemical and physiological approaches to investigate the role of posttranslational modifications (protein phosphorylation) in regulating the mitochondrial bioenergetics and oxidative stress. the comparative approach used in this study involves analyzing and comparing responses to h/r stress in the tissues of hypoxia-tolerant and hypoxia-sensitive animals including marine bivalves, crustaceans and terrestrial mammals (domestic pigs). anforderungsprofil:

requirements:
  • masters' degree or diploma in biology or related fields;
or bachelor's degree inbiology with at least one year experience in a research laboratory * high motivation and willingness to learn new techniques and approaches in metabolic physiology and molecular biology * ability to work in an international team * willingness to work with domestic and marine animals * ability to plan, organize and conduct independent research * fluency in english (oral and written) and strong communication skills * strong motivation to complete qualification work for a ph. d. degree prior experience in animal physiology, biochemistry, molecular biology or protein sciences would be a strong asset but is not required. weitere informationen
