PhD (m/f/x) Exploring agricultural diversification strategies to foster landscap
Subject: Exploring agricultural diversification strategies to foster landscape multifunctionality
Project start: 1st February 2020. Working time 65% (25,35 hours per week), limited to 3 years.Your tasks:
This PhD project will explore the effects of farm-level diversification strategies on the (optimal) provision of landscape-level environmental public benefits (e.g. water quality and biodiversity). Building upon existing models and frameworks provided by the UFZ, the candidate should further develop and apply landscape-scale models (e.g. the process-based agro-hydrological SWAT model, statistical models for selected biodiversity and ecosystem service indicators) in combination with multi-objective optimization algorithms and possibly agent-based modelling. The student will work in a collaborative environment with other PhD students in the INTERCEDE research school, including joint synthesis projects.Your profile:
- Master’s degree in Geography, Geoecology, Management of Natural Resources, Agricultural Economics, Resource Economics or equivalent fields with a strong focus on landscape-scale analysis
- Motivation to work in an interdisciplinary environment together with social and natural scientists
- Experience in GIS, R, and Python is advantageous
- Knowledge on agri-environmental measures and policy is beneficial
- Proficient English language skills
We offer:
- Top level interdisciplinary research at a research centre which enjoys an excellent reputation within Germany as well as internationally
- Excellent technical facilities
- Work in inter-disciplinary and multinational teams
- Excellent links to national and international research networks
