About the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT)
The role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This involves strengthening Australia’s security, enhancing Australia’s prosperity, delivering an effective and high-quality overseas aid program and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas.The department provides foreign, trade and development policy advice to the Australian Government. DFAT also works with other Australian government agencies to drive coordination of Australia’s pursuit of global, regional and bilateral interests.
About the Position
Under direction of the Public Affairs Manager, the Public Affairs Officer is responsible for assisting in the delivery of public affairs events, the public diplomacy strategy, and managing social media strategy and platforms. The position also provides general administrative assistance as part of a leave back-up support for the Executive Assistant to the Ambassador’s office as needed.The key responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
Public affairs, social media and events- Contribute towards the development of the Embassy’s broader public diplomacy strategy and related activities and support the Embassy’s press engagement.
- Lead on the Embassy’s social media accounts (currently Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and the Embassy website) and those of key embassy stakeholders.
- Proactively identify opportunities for social media content creation and engagement.
- Engage with DFAT headquarters, other Australian embassies in Europe and relevant stakeholders in support of public diplomacy and social media activities.
- Under direction, prepare, organise and assist with the planning, operational and logistic elements of events such as embassy functions, receptions and other forms of official hospitality.
- Assist with drafting, translating and preparing, official correspondence, talking points and speeches in English and German.
- Support visits by embassy staff and members or Australian ministers and senior officials by assisting with event planning, logistics, appointments and other elements of visit programs.
- Manage post e-mail inbox, including distributing items to relevant work areas, and responding to enquiries relating to public diplomacy.
- Provide policy support to the broader political/economic team, including through policy research on relevant topics relating to German foreign, security and economic policy and bilateral relations between Australia and Germany.
- Analyse and provide advice as required on aspects of German foreign policy and political developments.
- Act as back-up for the Ambassador’s Executive Assistant during times of absence, including providing administrative support to the Ambassador such as booking appointments, greeting and escorting visitors, and organising travel.
Qualifications/Experience
- High level written and spoken English and German communication skills.
- Experience working in with social media platforms and an ability to draft content and improve digital engagement.
- Experience in event management and visits coordination.
- Strong organisational skills and an ability to prioritise and meet tight deadlines.
- Ability to work well independently within a small and busy team.
- Strong capacity to exercise discretion and judgement and excellent attention to detail.
