Applied Microbiome Research
This is a temporary position to prepare a cooperative doctoral thesis with concurrent employment. The weekly working hours are 25.675 hours (65%). Remuneration will be in accordance with the German civil service payment group system and can, depending on the tasks assigned and academic / professional suitability, be up to a maximum of pay group E13 TV L. The place of employment is Villingen-Schwenningen. We are happy to accept applications in either German and / or English language.

The position is part of the CoHMed project (www.cohmed.de) at Furtwangen University. This is a large innovation and transfer partnership with the regional medical and medical engineering industry. This subproject, will continue its successful work on microbial communities on ophthalmologically relevant surfaces and will analyse associations of the human microbiome with ocular diseases using state-of-the-art microbiomics methods (cf. Fritz et al. (2020), Sci Rep 10(1):5577; Fritz et al. (2021), Front Cell Infect Microbiol 11:745653). Project partners are the Eberhardt-Karls-University of Tuebingen and Carl Zeiss Vision International GmbH. The advertised position offers an excellent opportunity to prepare an application-oriented microbiology doctoral thesis.

Your tasks will include:

  • analysis of microbial communities from human samples (intestinal tract, skin) and on optical surfaces using cultural and molecular methods (NGS, PCR, ELISA, etc.)
  • antimicrobial efficacy tests
  • application and further development of rapid methods for the detection of microorganisms
  • bioinformatic and statistical analyses of experimental data
  • writing reports and scientific publications
  • co-supervision of students’ scientific work within the framework of the project

We expect:

A university degree in microbiology (bacteriology, virology), molecular biology, biochemistry, biotechnology or related subjects. In addition, willingness to prepare a doctoral thesis and good IT skills are expected. Experience with R, microbiome analysis software (e.g. QIIME 2), rapid methods for the detection of microorganisms or antiviral efficacy tests is an advantage.
