PostDoc Polar Boundary Layer Meteorology

Awi - via Umantis - Rex - 22-01-2020 zur Vakanz

The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government. AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology, geochemistry and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.

PostDoc "Polar Boundary Layer Meteorology" (m/f/d)

Background

Along with the dramatic loss of polar sea ice the polar atmosphere is strongly warming. To better understand polar atmospheric boundary layer processes and their interaction with sea ice turbulent fluxes of energy and momentum will be quantified based on in-situ measurements. Results will be used for an improved representation of the atmospheric energy and momentum budget in climate models.

This PostDoc project aims at the analysis of airborne measurements obtained by AWI during the last 30 years and during future campaigns. Results will help to better characterize and understand the boundary layer fluxes and their variability including possible trends, and to improve parametrizations based on observations and microscale modelling.

The position is part of our recruiting initiative AWI INSPIRES - INternational Science Program for Integrative Research in Earth Systems. AWI INSPIRES aims at strengthening our new research program “Changing Earth, Sustaining our Future”. Details about all open positions and the general application requirements can be found at

Tasks

You will
  • analyse data from aircraft campaigns in the Antarctic and Arctic boundary layer over sea ice, which are available from previous and ongoing campaigns including those for MOSAiC.
  • participate in an aircraft campaign planned for spring 2021 with the two AWI polar aircraft over Fram Strait. The campaigns aim, e.g. to enlargen our data base on turbulent fluxes in polar boundary layer clouds.
  • determine the measured turbulent fluxes, and document them for the validation of climate and weather forecast models.
  • relate the fluxes to the forcing by the sea ice surface and clouds with the goal to improve flux parametrizations, e.g. of convection over leads, based on observations and microscale modelling.

Requirements

  • PhD degree in meteorology or physics or related fields
  • Excellent knowledge in boundary layer meteorology.
  • Experience with microscale modelling and turbulence measurements is a benefit.
  • Excellent English language skills, both written and spoken
  • Readiness to participate in aircraft campaigns to the Arctic
