The Junior Research Group "Experimental Pathology" (Head: Jun.-Prof. Dr. Monika Hämmerle) at the Martin- Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg, Germany, is seeking a highly motivated
PhD student (m-f-d) payment according to E13 TV-L (65%) for 3 years.
The advertised PhD student position (13 TV-L, 65%) is available within the newly established Research Training Group RTG2751 “Inflammatory cues as modulators of early pancreatic carcinogenesis (InCuPanC)” fully funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The RTG2751 provides a structured post-graduate training program including various workshops and seminars supporting students in establishing a successful scientific career. The research consortium RTG2751 is a highly interdisciplinary network of clinical scientists and biomedical researchers, providing expert knowledge in both pre-clinical and translational pancreatic cancer research including relevant genetic in vivo models serving as central platform for different inflammatory triggers of pancreatic carcinogenesis, as well as state-of-the-art transcriptomics, proteomics and CRISPR-based screening methods, thereby enabling excellent interdisciplinary training for PhD students. The project: The main goal of the herein advertised PhD project (Project B5) is to characterize the role of platelets in the regulation of tumor initiation and progression in early pancreatic carcinogenesis in vitro and in vivo. Own preliminary work has shown a significant impact of platelets on tumor growth and metastasis (JCI 2016; Nature Comm 2017; Blood 2017; MCT 2017; Cancer Cell 2018), which we would like to characterize further, thereby focusing on the regulation of the tumor immune microenvironment by platelets.

Requirements: • Completed excellent Master's degree in Life Sciences • High interest in translational cancer research • Practical scientific expertise and strong theoretical background in cancer research • Creative and critical team player with strong problem-solving skills • Very good English skills
