The Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, Faculty of Natural Sciences I, Institute of Biology/Zoology,
Department of Animal Physiology, offers a vacancy for a duration of 3 years for a
Research assistant / PhD student (m-f-d)
The position is part time (50%) and available as soon as possible.
The salary will be according German Public Service Salary Scale 13 TV-L
Research in our group is focused on insect olfaction with a special interest in the molecular basis of phero-
mone and plant odor detection in pest insects and beneficial species such as moths, locust and bees
(www.animal-physiol.uni-halle.de). For strengthening our team, we are seeking for a motivated group
member that in the framework of a PhD will work on the reception and transduction of olfactory signals in
the desert locust Schistocerca gregaria. The planned work will include molecular biological, histological and
biochemical analysis of olfactory signaling elements, in particular of odorant receptors that are expressed in
chemosensory neurons inside and beyond the antenna.
Work tasks:
- planning, performance and analysis of laboratory experiments
- drafting and publication of research results
- participation in cooperation projects
- contribution to teaching of the group (planning and conduction). Mentoring of BSC and MSC students in the
- organizational research tasks (animal rearing, instrument care)
Requirements:
- scientific university degree (master or equivalent graduation) in biology, biochemistry or related sciences
- high interest in experimental work and chemosensory systems
- knowledge in molecular biological, biochemical and histological methods
- high team spirit, high motivation and a very good command of English
