PhD (m/f/d) in the area of sea ice and ocean modelling
The DFG-funded International Research Training Group ArcTrain, a collaborative project between the University of Bremen, the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research, and a consortium of eight Canadian universities invites applications for a PhD position (m/f/d) in the area of sea ice and ocean modelling in the framework of project HB-02: Consequences of a changing Arctic for the land-fast ice distribution and season: estimates from a numerical sea ice model.
Immobile land-fast ice in the Arctic peripheral seas strongly affects atmosphere-ice-ocean interactions, ice formation, and even the formation of the Arctic cold halocline layer. Land-fast ice formation and stability is different from open ocean sea ice, so that the general decrease of summer and winter sea-ice extend is not entirely reflected in land-fast ice distribution and timing of breakup. The land-fast ice season often also reduced in length, but land-fast ice decline is more episodic. Estimating the future development of fast ice distribution and breakup requires numerical models with a good fast ice representation.
Tasks
- You will evaluate coupled sea-ice-ocean model simulations with the help of satellite observations with the aim to improve model physics
- You will tune the improved model against remote sensing data and in-situ data using data assimilation techniques
- Future projections of fast ice distributions may be attempted
- You will publish the result of her/his work in peer reviewed journals and at international conferences.
Requirements
- MSc or equivalent in physical oceanography, meteorology, physics, applied mathematics or related fields
- Solid background in sea ice and ocean dynamics
- You should have excellent English language skills and should enjoy working in an international and interdisciplinary team.
- Experience with numerical modelling, scientific computing (UNIX / LINUX, FORTRAN) and large data sets is advantageous.
