Research Associate Modelling and computer

Earthworks - Ingolstadt - 19-03-2019 zur Vakanz

With 5.800 students in economics and technology, along with 600 employees, we help create the future. Success in an application-oriented education, research, and an executive education is our goal.

Help us create the future as a:

Research Associate (m/f)

"Modelling and computer-based control of thermally activated traffic infrastructure"

Center of Applied Research

Institute of new Energy Systems

(Reference number P-18/160)

The
Institute of new Energy Systems (InES)
is one of three institutes at the Center of Applied Research at Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt (THI). Currently, there are six professors and more than 25 scientists at InES working on pioneering technologies in the broad field of renewable energies. Please visit

for details on selected research projects at InES.
We are seeking a research associate (m/f) for a research and development project that is fully funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi). The project aims at numerical simulation and model-predictive control of thermally activated traffic infrastructure.

When pavements, bridges or ramps are covered with snow or ice, they represent potentially dangerous infrastructures for traffic. Furthermore, seasonal variations of temperatures accelerate ageing of bridges or other structures. Thermal activation of infrastructural components is a modern concept for active control of temperatures. It is accomplished by integrating heating and/or cooling devices in the infrastructure that are ideally supplied from renewable energy resources. The focus of this project is to create a realistic simulation of selected traffic infrastructures in numerical CFD models. Therefore, modelling of different heating and cooling scenarios is foreseen based on examples from practice. Additionally, concepts for model-predicative control will be integrated and further developed. The ultimate goal is the development of a versatile practical control mechanism that is useful for different infrastructures and that accounts for variable climate and weather conditions.

Your responsibilities:

  • Application and development of numerical heat transport and CFD models for thermally activated traffic infrastructure based on existing simulation platforms
  • Development and application of algorithms for model predictive control of thermally activated infrastructures
  • Project coordination with partners from industry and supervision of B.Sc. and M.Sc. students
  • Presentation of results at conferences and publishing in peer-reviewed journals

Your profile:

We are seeking a creative and independent person with a strong quantitative background, including numerical modelling and programming skills. Our ideal candidate has a passion for applied science and shows a willingness to work in an evolving interdisciplinary team. Applicants must have a completed master's degree in physics, applied mathematics, control engineering, electrical engineering, informatics, engineering science, natural science or any related field. Applicants must also be able to learn and pursue quantitative research and computational tasks. Good communication skills are essential. Skills in speaking, reading, and writing about science in English and German are preferable.

We offer a temporary full-time position lasting two years with the possibility of extension. Applications will be reviewed until the position is filled. The remuneration shall be in line with the German industrial agreement TV-L salary group 13.

The possibility of a cooperative doctorate will be supported.
The positions starts as soon as possible.

The ideal applicant should be comfortable with a multi-faceted, responsible position and should have the ability to work effectively both independently and with a team. We offer a family-friendly working environment, flexible working hours, and an attractive workplace.

Individuals with disabilities of the same suitability will be favoured for this position. We strongly encourage applications from female candidates (Section 7 Subsection 3 BayGIG, Bavarian Women's Equality Law).

Please send your detailed portfolio (Curriculum Vitae, copies of certificates, a short statement of research experience and interest, the names and contact information of two potential references, and supporting documents about any former employment)
