Two Master theses Microplastics in the Antarctic
Microplastics (MP) are ubiquitous and considerable quantities can even be detected in the remote Antarctic. However, until now, large knowledge gaps prevail regarding different ecosystem compartments. Due to methodological problems, currently only few studies were performed to detect small MP (> 15 µm) in sediment samples or Antarctic biota.
Where
: Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research, division "Biosciences", sections Shelf Seas Systems Ecology in Helgoland. The Master theses will be performed in close cooperation with the University BaselTasks
In the herein proposed Master theses, faeces from Weddell seals and sediment samples will be analyzed with the aim to gain insights on the importance of microplastics in the Antarctic food web and the possible accumulation of microplastics in Antarctic sediments. Samples were taken in the framework of thePolarstern expedition PS124
to the southern Weddell Sea and Dronning Maud Land Region as part of the project “Occurrence of Microplastics in the Southern Ocean”.
To assess the whole size range of particles, the samples will be sequentially analyzed by ATR-FTIR and FTIR-microscopy.
