Awi - via Umantis - Potsdam - 22-01-2020 zur Vakanz

The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government. AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology, geochemistry and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.

PhD "State-of-the-art modelling of Arctic climatic and biodiversity changes" (m/f/d)

Background

Simulations from a regional high-resolution Earth System Model over Scandinavia and the pan-Arctic will be used to examine the response of the coupled Arctic atmosphere-terrestrial system to changes in the cryosphere (e.g. snow and sea ice cover, rain-on-snow events and permafrost), in biodiversity and in the atmosphere as well as their feedbacks and interactions. Those responses impact local Arctic communities that are exploiting tundra ecosystems as rangeland for reindeer.

The position is part of our recruiting initiative AWI INSPIRES - INternational Science Program for Integrative Research in Earth Systems. AWI INSPIRES aims at strengthening our new research program “Changing Earth, Sustaining our Future”. Details about all open positions and the general application requirements can be found at

  • participate in developing a regional Earth System Model ICON-CLM5 (in cooperation with partners from the HGF ESM and REKLIM initiative),
  • implement processes reflecting different socio-economic responses to Arctic change,
  • perform high-resolution atmospheric modelling with a focus on land-atmosphere interactions.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in meteorology, physics, geosciences or a related discipline
