As part of the EU Horizon 2020 research initative, the AWIsection „Physical Oceanography of Polar Seas“ received funding to support a PDRA until the end of the project, scheduled for July 31st, 2023.

Tasks

You will independently conduct studies with the global ice-ocean Model FESOM to
investigate, as part of the EU-Horizon2020 project TiPACCs (Tipping Points in Antarctic Climate Components; the impact of climate change on the Antarctic marginal seas. The focus will be on the potential irreversibility of oceanic regime shifts and their influence on the stability of the Antarctic Ice Sheet. For this study, FESOM will be coupled with the Parallel Ice Sheet Model PISM in collaboration with the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK). The PDRAs of both institutes are jointly responsible for setting up and coupling the two models. You are also expected toanalyze and interpret the model results, present findings at project workshops and international conferences, and publish inrecognized journals.

Requirements

  • PhD degree in Physical Oceanography or a related discipline
  • expert knowledge in handling a complex numerical model

Additional skills and knowledge

  • expertise in finite-element ocean modeling and Antarctic oceanography including sea-ice physics
  • excellent skills in English,
  • a high level of self-motivation
