Alfred-Wegener - via Umantis - Oldenburg - 14-05-2020 zur Vakanz

The Helmholtz-Institute for Functional Marine Biodiversity (HIFMB) is a new institute on interdisciplinary marine biodiversity research, established on the campus of the Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg. It joins the scientific profiles of the Institute of Chemistry and Biology of Marine Systems (ICBM) Oldenburg and the Alfred Wegener Institute – Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research Bremerhaven (AWI).

5 Postdoc Positions "Unravel unifying principles of marine population response to climate change"

Background

In order to advance career development and to bring in novel perspectives into the institute, HIFMB has created an independent postdoc pool, HIPP, that offers postdoctoral scientists the opportunity to develop own research ideas and to actively shape their scientific careers. For each call, we set a topical context in order to foster collaborations between postdocs. For this call, we invite postdoc projects to unravel unifying principles of marine population response to climate change.

In this context, we offer
5 postdoctoral positions
. Each postdoc will be financed for a fixed term of 3 years (100% TVöD E13, Jan 1 2021 to Dec 31 2023).

Unravel unifying principles of marine population response to climate change

An integrative understanding of responses at the molecular, cellular, organ, and organismal level to environmental changes requires an assessment of intra- and inter-population variability of organisms in environmental acclimation and adaptation. Understanding the adaptive capacity of key marine species is a prerequisite for a mechanistic understanding of how changing climate (warming, acidification, hypoxia) affects marine life. Our current understanding of functional or numerical responses to changing conditions is often specific to certain species. In order to understand unifying principles, we need to consider a variety of functionally important species across taxa and regions. Combining empirical and theoretical studies will allow unraveling unifying principles to derive valid indicators of vulnerability to environmental change. We especially welcome studies on acclimation and adaptation at the level of ecologically relevant functional traits as well as the underlying genetic architecture. We envision the postdocs to create synergy by using comparable methods (e.g. analyzing genomic, transcriptomic or physiological responses) across a range of key species from different regions. Given the mission of HIFMB as collaboration between AWI and UOL, we prioritize research in our mainly studied polar and temperate regions, but comparative approaches to other marine systems are explicitly welcomed. We are also interested in addressing how these responses shape species interaction and the species’ role in trophic webs, both through field, experimental, or modelling work. Thereby the postdoc contributes to the mission of HIFMB and the Helmholtz program POF IV, especially by understanding the functional role of biodiversity in marine systems and its consequences to services to humankind.
