For our location in Hamburg we are seeking a Ph.D. student for Structure and Dynamics of Nanoconfined Water

Water is of central importance in many scientific disciplines and technological processes. It is often present in confined spaces where its physical and chemical properties deviate from the liquid state, e.g., a significantly reduced melting point. As part of a project funded by the Landesforschungsförderung (LFF) Hamburg the Ph.D. student will investigate the structure and dynamics of water and aqueous solutions confined in nanopores by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD, PDF) and X-ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy (XPCS). The student will work in the FS-CXS group led by Prof. Dr. Grübel at DESY in close collaboration with the partner groups at University Hamburg and TU Hamburg (

).

The position

  • Plan and participate in X-ray scattering experiments at modern light sources (PETRA III, ESRF, European XFEL), in particular XRD, PDF and XPCS
  •  Analysis of large data sets
  •  Work in close collaboration with groups that are part of the LFF Project (Hamburg University and TU Hamburg)

Requirements

  • Master in physics, physical chemistry or similar
  • Good English language skills
  • Ability to work in the research team at DESY and within the LFF project with external partners (UHH and TUHH)
  • Experience in X-ray physics, X-ray data analysis and programming skills are assets

Salary and benefits are commensurate with those of public service organisations in Germany. Classification is based upon qualifications and assigned duties.
