PhD Intertidal Nutrient and Carbon shifts under Climate Change
The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government. AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology, geochemistry and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.
PhD position "Intertidal Nutrient and Carbon shifts under Climate Change" (m/f/d)
Background
The influence of sea level rise, erosional rates and increased intertidal warming in the Wadden Sea on biogeochemical processes is not known. We need to understand how these changes will affect the nutrient availability, dynamics and especially biogenic carbon sequestration in the highly productive shallow Wadden Sea zone. This Ph.D. position will analyze all available information for N,P and C from past and present data and calculate budgets for nutrient and carbon turnover based on climate change scenarios. Experiments will be carried out to evaluate nutrient dynamics in scenarios of inundation, erosion and warming. This information will be used to inform policy makers of potential changes in productivity and in CO2 sequestration discussions. The position is part of our recruiting initiative AWI INSPIRES - INternational Science Program for Integrative Research in Earth Systems. AWI INSPIRES aims at strengthening our new research program “Changing Earth, Sustaining our Future”. Details about all open positions and the general application requirements can be found at

You will- analyze long term and available data on N,P and C fluxes in the German Wadden Sea,
- develop future scenarios based on climate change for N,P and C fluxes/ sequestration in the Wadden Sea,
- carry out experiments with scenarios of inundation, erosion and warming,
- feed this information in to ENA models and relate it to the Sea Level rise models (FESOM-C) in collaboration with colleagues, with the aim to evaluate productivity shifts in the system, and
- inform and interact with policy makers and governing bodies.
