Working Student / Intern (f/m/d) Encrypted File Sharing in Karlsruhe

PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES

SAP Security Research’s objective is to understand new basic principles in research, analyze the business value for SAP, refine the method and adapt them for SAP. By building prototypes and blueprints for productization, we support the SAP development teams to consume the research results.

As the global research department for security we are working on innovations around Anonymization, Machine Learning and Applied Cryptography. We are a young and dynamic team of post-doctoral researchers and PhD Students striving for new ways to protect enterprise systems. As such, we can support you during your internship on academic as well as hands-on architectural questions.

EXPECTATIONS AND TASKS

Today, many companies do not migrate to the cloud, because of security concerns. Data might get leaked, stolen or a government might force cloud providers to hand over the data. We want to investigate how Trusted Hardware, e.g., Intel SGX, can be used to protect specific parts of applications to overcome these concerns. Intel SGX allows an isolated execution of programs, i.e. the executing is strictly separated and protected from all other software on the system. Not even the owner of the hardware is able to influence the program execution and access the data. In a cloud computing environment, this means that a cloud provider can process sensitive customer data without plaintext access to them.

Our goal is to execute specific parts of the software in the secure hardware to be as performant and secure as possible. Our current focus lies on protected file sharing, i.e., a user can upload encrypted files to cloud provider, which he does not trust, and share files with other users. With the support of the supervisor, you should develop a concept, implement the idea in C++ and create an exhaustive evaluation.

We offer this position mainly for internship and alternatively for working students (f/m/d). The length is flexible length, but we recommend at least 5 months.

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

Student (f/m/d) at a university or a university of applied sciences
Enrolled in computer science or a related program
Very good programming skills in C++
Proficiency in algorithm design or software development
Fluency in German or in English (written and spoken)
Ability to communicate accurately and proactively
Optimally basics in cryptography/security
Your set of application documents should contain a cover letter, a resume in table form, current university transcript of records, copies of any academic degrees already earned, and if available, references from former employers (including internships). Please describe your experience and skills in foreign languages and computer programs / programming languages.
