DESY, with its 2700 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world’s leading research centers. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.

The Photon-Science Detector Group designs and builds innovative and state-of-the-art area detectors for the photon sources in Hamburg and world-wide. The group works in close collaboration with world leading research groups in photon-science, as well as with other detector groups worldwide. Because of the exponentially increasing data volumes, we have started a programme in early data selection and reduction. For this programme we are looking for a postdoc with experience in data reduction and machine learning.

The position

  • Investigate the possibilities of early data reduction of multi-megapixel detectors
  • Develop machine learning tools for discrimination between good and bad data
  • Contribute to the development of a strategy for handling future data rates
  • Contribute to the development of a facility-wide network
  • Write scientific presentations, and give presentations at conference

Requirements

  • PhD in physics, programming, electronics or equivalent qualification
  • Experience in dealing with large data volumes and data rates
  • Experience in machine learning
  • Knowledge of English
  • Excellent team player
For further information, please contact Prof. Dr Heinz Graafsma, +49 40 8998 1678 (

The position is limited until 31 July 2023.
Salary and benefits are commensurate with those of public service organisations in Germany. Classification is based upon qualifications and assigned duties. Handicapped persons will be given preference to other equally qualified applicants. DESY operates flexible work schemes. DESY is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer and encourages applications from women. Vacant positions at DESY are in general open to part-time work. During each application procedure DESY will assess whether the post can be filled with part-time employees.

We are looking forward to your application via our application system.
