PostDoc Attribution and Prediction System in Sea Ice Physics
The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government. AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology, geochemistry and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.
PostDoc "Attribution and Prediction System in Sea Ice Physics" (m/f/d)
Background
Polar amplification leads to the emergence of unusual climate events, such as the Polynia opening up north of Greenland in February 2018 or the extremely low sea ice extent in October 2019. Diagnostic capacities are needed to understand the governing processes and underlying causes of such events in near real-time.This project will develop and apply an attribution and seasonal prediction system based on a global configuration of the sea ice-ocean model FESOM2 (fesom.de) with high resolution in polar regions. The system will be designed based on experience gained in the Sea Ice Prediction Network SIPN (
The new system will be initialized with remotely-sensed and in-situ observations and will be run quasi-operationally. Seasonal predictions are generated from an ensemble of atmospheric forcing of past years.
The position is part of our recruiting initiative AWI INSPIRES - INternational Science Program for Integrative Research in Earth Systems. AWI INSPIRES aims at strengthening our new research program “Changing Earth, Sustaining our Future”. Details about all open positions and the general application requirements can be found at
.
Tasks
You will- set up the model configuration and operationalize the run scripts,
- optimize the model parameters for the atmospheric forcing (ERA5, available almost in near real-time),
- initialize the system with observations of the sea ice-ocean system employing the Parallel Data Assimilation Framework (pdaf.awi.de),
- assess the attribution system performance for some recent extreme events, and
- analyse the predictive skill.
Requirements
- PhD Degree in physics, oceanography, meteorology or a related field.
- Excellent programming skills (FORTRAN, python, bash scripting).
- Experience in numerical modelling.
- Excellent English language skills, both written and spoken.
- Readiness to participate in seagoing and land expeditions to the Arctic.
