PhD DYNAMO (m/f/x)
Subject: 4: The role of lakes and reservoirs in modulating solute export signals from catchments
Project start: 1st March 2020. Working time 65% (25.35 hours per week), limited to 3 years.Your tasks:
Lakes and reservoirs receive water and matter from their catchment, including nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus. Some of this matter is processed; some matter is temporarily or permanently retained in the water body.Your task will be to investigate how hydrological and climatic events at different time scales and intensities influence the retention of nutrients in lakes and reservoirs. You will develop and apply a coupled catchment-lake model to simulate nutrient transport, storage and processing under different scenarios of hydrology, land use and lake characteristics. You will also analyse and interpret high quality measured data from catchment-reservoir systems in Germany that the UFZ continually monitors. Ultimately, together with the other PhD students in the PhD cohort, your work will help to improve our models’ ability to predict nutrient processing and retention in water supply reservoirs at catchment scale.
The position will be based in the Department of Lake Research at the UFZ’s campus in Magdeburg, but there will be regular exchange with other UFZ departments in Leipzig and Halle as well as with our international partners.
Your profile:
- Master’s degree in limnology, biology, hydrology, environmental science or a related field.
- Knowledge of aquatic ecosystems, biogeochemistry and hydrology.
- Strong analytical skills and knowledge of scripting languages like R, Python, or Matlab or other programming languages.
- Experience in statistical modelling and time-series analysis is an advantage.
- Proficiency in English.
- Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team and willingness to collaborate with international partners.
We offer:
- Top level interdisciplinary research at a research centre which enjoys an excellent reputation within Germany as well as internationally
- Excellent technical facilities
- Work in inter-disciplinary and multinational teams
- Excellent links to national and international research networks
- Support and optimal training courses by our graduate school (HIGRADE)
