Thesis Optimization of B-vitamin analysis in seawater using HPLC
This master project is integrated in the DFG project
ViTMeD
which investigates how trace metals (iron, zinc and copper) and vitamin B
12
are cycled through Southern Ocean (SO) planktonic food webs and influence plankton species succession. While the importance of iron for the primary production of the SO has long been recognized, other trace metals and vitamins have recently been implicated in shaping the community composition in other high nutrient low chlorophyll (HNLC) regions. Even though iron, zinc and cobalt concentrations have been reported in the world ocean, no measurements of vitamin B
12
and its analogs exist south of the equator. This is in part because only three laboratories in the world are set up to measure B-vitamins.
Tasks
- The goal of this masters is to establish and adapt published methods for the quantitative analysis of B-vitamins including B
to the in-house LC-MS/MS system, in collaboration with Jana Geuer (M.Sc.) and Dr. Bernd Krock.
- You will then quantify dissolved vitamin concentrations in samples collected from the SO.
Requirements
- Master in marine science or chemistry with strong analytical capabilities or similiar qualifications
- Experience with HPLC or MS is a plus.
