Alfred-Wegener - via Umantis - Potsdam - 20-07-2022 zur Vakanz

The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government. AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology, geochemistry and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.

PostDoc "Synthesizing methane emission datasets from the permafrost region" (m/f/d)

Background

This position is part of the new research challenge “Arctic Methane and Permafrost Challenge (AMPAC)” and the project AMPAC-net which aims to improve the understanding of the current methane emissions in the Arctic and their response to permafrost thaw. This collaborative research project is funded by the European Space Agency (ESA) and should build on concurrent international research activities.

You will address the
key question
of
reconciling methane emissions from the permafrost region
. The successful candidate will lead the development of the Arctic Methane Emissions data sub-catalogue and accordingly synthesize relevant datasets that will be integrated into the Arctic Permafrost Data Catalogue (

) hosted by AWI.

Tasks

  • Identify, mine, and integrate existing highly relevant Earth Observation and field datasets related to methane emissions including flux observations, EO landcover products, atmosphere observations
  • Promote a community effort to coordinate in situ data collection campaigns
  • Further integrate existing efforts of Arctic methane related repositories into the APGC
  • Develop and solicit new contributions from past and ongoing ESA, EC, NASA, and national efforts focusing on observations or syntheses related to Arctic methane
You will be embedded in the Permafrost Research Section in Potsdam and will be able to use the rich data, hardware and software resources available there. You will further play an active role in the organization of project workshops and meetings of international, collaborative groups internal to the project and within the broader research community.

Requirements

  • Completed doctoral degree in the field of terrestrial geosciences, geography, or other closely related field
  • Demonstrated experience working with methane flux datasets or other large observational datasets
  • Demonstrated experience with analysis of spatial datasets
  • Ability and willingness to work in a team and with international groups,
  • Excellent communication skills, coordination and organizational skills, and fluent knowledge of English
  • Interest in independent research, the presentation and publication of scientific data at conferences and workshops
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to write about and publish research results in the peer-review literature

Beneficial qualifications

  • Excellent publication record and experience presenting scientific results at international level
  • Prior experience with methane flux measurements
  • German language knowledge is a plus
