Data Technician/Scientist in Marine Conservation
Several initiatives are currently underway to establish Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in the Southern Ocean as parts of a global MPA network. In this framework, the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI), Helmholtz-Centre for Polar and Marine Research established the scientific basis of a Weddell Sea MPA (WSMPA). At present, the design of the actual WSMPA is negotiated under the Commission for Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR). In order to prepare for the time after the WSMPA adoption, in particular work on the development, organisation and implementation of the WSMPA research and monitoring plan will be addressed in this project.
In this context, we offer a position as a Data Technician/Scientist at the AWI/HIFMB (Bremerhaven or Oldenburg, Germany; place of employment by arrangement). The position is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture within the project "Designation and management of the CCAMLR MPA in the Weddell Sea". Funds are available for a full-time position, limited to 3 years.
Tasks
- Compilation and processing of georeferenced data sets (biology, oceanography, geology)
- Work on data storage in a management system for biological data
- GIS visualization/(cartographic) representation of the results
- Various analyses to identify habitats of key organisms of the Southern Ocean using spatial interpolation methods and modelling techniques (regression and classification methods, machine learning)
- Analyses with the MARXAN planning software (www.marxan.org) for the identification of most important areas for protection in the Weddell Sea
Requirements
- B.Sc. or equivalent plus at least 3 years job experience in geoinformation sciences or related fields, preferably with a focus on geodata analysis.
- Highly motivated person with enthusiasm for data and its statistical analysis
- Motivation to work in an interdisciplinary marine research context
- Profound knowledge of statistics
- Sound knowledge of ArcGIS desktop software suite
- Familiarity with programming language (e.g. R, Python)
- Very good communication and teamwork skills
- Good English language skills
