Our mission is to enable cultivated meat to be the sustainable and affordable choice, for everyone. We do that by developing growth media for cultivated meat production. We make it faster and cheaper to get media that scales, helping cultivated meat get from lab to market.

We’re looking for a Lab Manager to help our R&D team operate safely and smoothly, compliant with relevant standards and regulations. The Lab Manager will oversee safety and related training, lab operations, and inventory management. Additionally, the Lab Manager will be responsible for managing our lab tech and have some building and facility management responsibilities. To do this, the Lab Manager will coordinate with our R&D team, suppliers and service providers.

As a science-based business, this position is pivotal to our success. Exceptional organizational and communication skills are vital, as as attention to detail. Candidates should be able to work independently and collaboratively, demonstrating reliability and accountability in planning and executing the role’s responsibilities.

As our Lab Manager your responsibilities will include:

Safety and Training Protocols:

  • Act as the company Health and Safety Officer
  • Review, develop, implement, and oversee lab safety protocols, including regular training sessions for all technical staff, risk assessments, COSHH forms, and monitoring and escalating incidents and near incidents
  • Review, develop, implement, and conduct cell biology/aseptic technique basic training sessions for new technical staff
  • Oversee chemical and biological waste disposal, cleaning, maintenance, repairs administration and logistics
  • Ensure all lab activities comply with all current regulations and guidelines

Lab Operations and Management:

  • Work with the R&D team to review and maintain SOPs to ensure efficient lab operations, and compliance with industry standards
  • Manage, develop, and monitor the team's and your direct reports' competence and capacity. Identify and address their training, development, and resource needs in collaboration with other stakeholders.
  • Arrange the purchase of laboratory equipment; liaise with suppliers; arrange best quotes, arranging appropriate warranty and service packages for new equipment etc.; ensure appropriate maintenance of equipment
  • Ensure facilities, equipment, workstations, and communal areas are optimized for efficient workflow and that all areas are organized and meet presentable standards

Inventory and Supply Management:

  • Manage inventory and maintain stocks for materials needed for ongoing research projects, ensuring all resources are readily available and accounted for, minimizing operational downtime
  • Review our current inventory management system and implement necessary changes to improve efficiency, usability, organization, traceability, and cost savingsquart
  • Help plan and monitor budgets as well as submission of recharges for general lab purchases
  • Manage the preparation and logistics for shipping/receiving of materials and products, acting as primary contact for shipments and receipts, internationally and nationally

Building and Facilities Management:

  • Ensure basic facilities are maintained, health and safety regulations are met
  • Liaise with building management and relevant vendors and supervise teams of third party staff (cleaning, pest control, etc.)
  • Be the point of contact for relevant service providers for our production facility and conduct environmental monitoring
  • Assist with some basic office management when needed

A successful candidate must have at least 3 years experience in lab management, ideally in the biotechnology industry, including:

  • Running, maintaining and designing efficient cell and molecular biology laboratory environments
  • Overseeing multiple projects, managing schedules, resources, and ensuring project deliverables are met on time and within budget
  • Strong organizational and management skills to handle complex logistics and multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Electronic lab notebook (ELN) and laboratory information management system (LIMS) management
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of fostering collaboration within an interdisciplinary team
  • Line management and leadership experience
  • Experience performing mammalian cell culture

You should have experience in some, but not necessarily all, of the following areas:

  • Good laboratory practice (GLP)
  • NEBOSH Health and Safety Level 6
  • Quality management systems (ISO 9001)
  • Laboratory automation
  • Environmental monitoring
