Research Analyst
Morrison & Foerster LLP, an Am Law 50 law firm with 17 offices worldwide, has a fix-term opening for a Research Analyst (40 hours/week) within our Research Services Department in our Berlin office.
The Opportunity
It's an exciting time to join MoFo's growing Research Services team! The Research Analyst works as part of a firmwide team to provide timely, high quality research expertise for client work and business development efforts, deliver current awareness services, and assist in managing the firm’s print and online research resources.- As a Berlin-based position supporting a global law firm, the position provides legal and business development research primarily to the U.S. and Berlin offices in both English and German.
- As part of a firmwide research team, provide research expertise to support the firm’s practice areas and business development efforts, including carrying out straight-forward legal and business research independently, dealing with requests for articles and company searches, producing bio sheets and company overview reports, and assisting with information gathering for strategic research related to markets, industries, and competitors.
- Provide U.S. legal research, including locating relevant treatise sections and articles, case law searching, retrieving legal analytics, and complex research on expert witnesses.
- Assist with creating current awareness tools, and curating newsletters and alerts for ongoing monitoring of legal developments, clients, industries, and events.
- Demonstrate strong writing skills and the ability to distill and present research work product in a concise, professional manner.
- Proactively assess research requests and ensure that research meets stated and anticipated needs, consulting with senior team-members when needed.
- Manage German-language document delivery; interlibrary loans; and print and online collection development, maintenance and administration, including book acquisitions, cataloguing, serials management and circulation; day-to-day maintenance of our Berlin print collection; organizing German database logins; and assisting with renewals, contract reviews, product evaluations, and other tasks as assigned.
- Manage a Library Student Assistant, responsible for the Berlin library’s technical services and document delivery, as required.
- Ensure that library and research services are effectively promoted to attorneys and timekeepers.
- Help to educate and advise attorneys, trainees, and staff on sources and strategies for research, including delivering new hire orientations.
- Participate in projects that increase the value of library and research services to the Firm.
- Develop project management skills and possibly coordinate/lead small-scale projects.
- Track and record billable and non-billable time spent providing research services to library clients according to the Firm’s library billing policy. Close time notes on a daily basis.
- Professional fluency in English and German (reading, writing, speaking).
- Bachelor’s degree required plus a minimum of two years related experience or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience. Master’s degree in Library Science or Information Science or equivalent degree such as a J.D., M.B.A., or other advanced degree is a plus.
- Familiarity with key U.S. legal materials and databases including Westlaw and Lexis, along with strong online search and retrieval skills.
- Familiarity with key German legal databases including Beck Online and Juris, along with strong online search and retrieval skills.
- Experience with company and business research sources such as Capital IQ, Hoovers, or Intelligize is highly desirable. Experience with carrying out news searches and using one or more current awareness services, such as Vable is also desirable. Training will be provided as needed.
- Experience using a library management system, particularly EOS. Training will be provided as needed.
