The Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) with its 1,100 employees has gained an excellent reputation as an international competence centre for environmental sciences. We are part of the largest scientific organisation in Germany, the Helmholtz association. Our mission: Our research seeks to find a balance between social development and the long-term protection of our natural resources.
Perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) are man-made contaminants that are ubiquitously distributed in the environment. Especially long-chain PFAAs, such as perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) are problematic due to their extreme persistence, bioaccumulation potential and toxicity. A current field of research is how to purify contaminated water from these substances. Various types of adsorbents including activated carbon materials, ion exchange resins and zeolites are applied for this purpose. Especially, in cases where adsorbent pore sizes are close to molecule diameters of PFAAs, size-selectivity or even size exclusion effects are expected. This can even lead to differences in adsorbent efficiency for different PFAA isomers. The aim of the Master thesis is to develop an analytical method based on LC-MS that enables separation and quantification of individual linear and branched isomers of PFOA and PFOS. The method will be used to investigate and elucidate isomer-specific adsorption effects in removal of PFAAs from water.
Master thesis "Development of a quantitative LC-MS method for PFAA isomers"

- Data interpretation
- Present the results as oral presentation and as report (Master thesis)
Your profile:
- Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or similar
- Strong interest and experience/specialization in analytical chemistry
- Highly motivated and reliable
- Fluent in English (in word and writing), Master thesis in English is preferred
We offer:
- A close and good care
- Exciting insights into the work of a leading institute
