The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government. AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology, geochemistry and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.

PostDoc for "Molecular identification and quantification of bivalve larvae" (m/f/d)

Background

The DAM research mission aims to develop and support options for sustainable use of marine resources and ecosystem services provided by marine protected areas. By focussing on bivalves as epibenthic habitat engineers (especially restored oyster reefs) this part of the project will investigate whether planktonic life stages spill over from protected or restored habitats to create a network with surrounding habitats and other protected areas. Diversity of planktonic life stages will be characterized by metabarcoding and their dispersal will be quantified by quantitative/digital PCR to ground truth connectivity models.

Tasks

  • Molecularly characterize diversity of bivalve larvae in samples collected in marine protected areas using metabarcoding
  • Develop and optimise realtime or digital PCR assays to quantify target species

Requirements

  • PhD in biology, genetics or related field
  • Expertise in molecular ecology (especially metabarcoding of metazoans)
  • Experience in ship and land based sampling of plankton
  • Experience with statistics and bioinformatics
  • Excellent communication skills in English (spoken and written)
