Doctoral researcher (m/f/x)
Subject: Anoxic transformation of antibiotics in wastewater at different size and complexity scales
Project start: 1st April 2020. Working time 65% (25.35 hours per week), limited to 3 years. The interviews will take place on 6 and 7 of February.Your tasks:
Residual antibiotics and their transformation products end up in wastewater after their use, contributing to the development and spread of antibiotic resistance. While aerobic degradation is widely studied, anoxic processes are largely unknown. The doctoral researcher will study the interplay of anaerobic, anoxic and oxic transformation of antibiotics at different scales from lab batch culture to real wastewater treatment systems. The tasks of the candidate will include: 1) development of methods for the quantification of antibiotics and their transformation products down to ng/L-concentrations in complex medium (wastewater); 2) long-term operation of simulated wastewater treatment processes at lab-scale; 3) metagenomic and/or metaproteomic sequencing to obtain insights into the molecular basis of antibiotic degradation.Your profile:
The candidate should have a master degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Environmental Biotechnology, Biochemistry or equivalent fields; ideally with a strong interest and profound background in microbiology and molecular biology and wastewater treatment. Knowledge of analytical chemistry is important. The candidate should be proficient in English and motivated to work in an international and interdisciplinary team.
We offer:
- Top level interdisciplinary research at a research centre which enjoys an excellent reputation within Germany as well as internationally
- Excellent technical facilities
- Work in inter-disciplinary and multinational teams
- Excellent links to national and international research networks
- Support and optimal training courses by our graduate school (HIGRADE)
