PostDoc Dust and impurity analysis of Antarctic ice cores
The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government. AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology, geochemistry and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.
PostDoc "Dust and impurity analysis of Antarctic ice cores" (m/f/d)
Background
Atmospheric large-scale circulation is reflected in regional circulation patterns over Antarctica. Chemical and physical properties of trace components, deposited on the ice sheet, capture these changes and enable the reconstruction of Holocene circulation patterns by the analysis of an unique ice core array from East Antarctica. This Postdoc Project aims at the reconstruction of the late Holocene circulation and accumulation pattern over East Antarctica using new high-resolution aerosol records from 7+ ice cores covering the entire Atlantic sector. After upgrading aeolian dust lines of the continuous flow analysis (CFA) system, the existing records will be complemented with high-quality records from further ice cores. The project derives climate reconstructions over the last few millennia and establishes dust as a key proxy also in preparation for Beyond EPICA – oldest ice.
The position is part of our recruiting initiative AWI INSPIRES - INternational Science Program for Integrative Research in Earth Systems. AWI INSPIRES aims at strengthening our new research program “Changing Earth, Sustaining our Future”. Details about all open positions and the general application requirements can be found at

Tasks
You will- compile, date and analyse an array of intermediate depth ice core aerosol records from Antarctica.
- investigate and interpret spatial and temporal variability of aerosol and snow deposition in the Atlantic sector of Antarctica, to investigate atmospheric circulation variability over the late Holocene period.
- pursue the development of new aerosol proxy in polar ice cores.
- develop and integrate additional continuous flow analysis (CFA) methods for aeolian dust aerosols into the existing CFA system.
- work with the AWI CFA team to generate high-quality ice-core aerosol records from additional Antarctic and Greenlandic ice cores.
Requirements
- Related PhD in Environmental Science, Geoscience, Natural Science or related fields.
- Established track record in the chemical analysis of ice cores and method development using continuous flow analysis.
- Experience in the acquisition and interpretation of ice core aerosol and dust records.
- Experience in large scale ice coring projects and international consortia structures.
- Experience as lead author in highly recognized journals.
