How to develop lightweight, stiff and vibration-optimized magnet carrier structures? Do marine plankton organisms serve as efficient role models and sources of inspiration?

We as the department “Bionic Lightweight Design and Functional Morphology” of the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) have been successfully working and researching for several years in the field of biomimetics, lightweight construction and structural optimization. In a current, exciting and interdisciplinary research project, we cooperate with the German Electron Synchrotron (DESY) to develop innovative magnet carrier structures of a particle accelerator. The carrier structures play a central role in the function of the particle accelerator, since they guarantee the stability of the magnets and thus also of the particle beam. The lightweight, stiff and vibration-optimized structures of diatoms are our role models! In the research field of biomimetics, we investigate how the design principles of diatoms can be transferred to magnet carrier structures in order to improve the properties of these structures. And here you come into play.

Tasks

  • Familiarization with the topic and the available programs
  • Development and construction of various concepts for innovative carrier structures
  • FEM calculations of constructions
  • Documentation of the work in a final report

Requirements

  • Motivation and initiative
  • Studies in mechanical engineering, biomimetics or similar subjects
  • Knowledge in design (CAD) and simulation (FEM)
