Scientist (m/f/d) with focus on climate modelling and diagnosis
In this project, novel storyline scenarios for recent extreme events, such as the heat wave in summer 2018 and wind storms, will be explored. The scenarios will be carried out with the ECMWF (OpenIFS) and ECHAM model by imposing the observed development of the large-scale atmospheric circulation (e.g. the jet stream and other structures) during the course of the integration by employing a scale-dependent spectral nudging approach—thereby separating dynamical from thermodynamic changes in the model. Furthermore, increased greenhouse gas concentrations, higher ocean temperatures and adjusted vegetation will be used to illustrate how recent extreme events and their impacts (e.g., on hydrology and rivers) would unfold in 2030, 2050 and 2100 for pathways in to 1.5°C, 2°C and 4°C warmer worlds. Focusing on scenarios for recent extreme events, that are fresh to people’s memory, facilitates understanding of climate change and thus adaptation.
Tasks
- Setup, carry out and analyse model experiments (storyline scenarios) for European extreme events with the AWI-CM in which the Jetstream is constrained towards reanalysis data employing a spectral nudging approach.
- Make the model data available to other HI-CAM partners.
- Evaluate the model data in terms of how recent European extremes events, such as the heat waves in 2018 and 2019, might evolve in 2050 and 2100 for pathways into 1.5, 2 and 4C warmer worlds. Also consider how these heat waves would have unfolded in pre-industrial times.
- Present the results at project meeting and national as well as international conferences.
- Write publications and contribute to the preparation of outreach material
