Creating Knowledge. Since 1502: Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) offers a wide range of
academic subjects in the areas of humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and medicine. The oldest and
largest university in Saxony-Anhalt was created in 1817 when the University of Wittenberg (founded in 1502)
merged with Friedrichs University Halle (founded in 1694). Today the university has 340 professors and 20,000
students. Research at the university focuses on nano and life sciences, the Enlightenment, society and culture.
The Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, in cooperation with the German Centre for Integrative
Biodiversity Research (iDiv) Halle-Jena-Leipzig, offers the following position in Leipzig, starting on 1 October

2022 until 30th June 2026:
Post-doctoral Researcher (m/f/d) as full-time employment (100%).
This opening is solely aimed at employees of Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg.
The salary will be up to Entgeltgruppe 13 TV-L, if the personal requirements and tasks are fulfilled. The workplace
will be in Leipzig in the research group of Prof Henrique Pereira (Biodiversity Conservation).

The project:
The German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) Halle-Jena-Leipzig is a National Research Centre
funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). Its central mission is to promote theory-driven synthesis and
data-driven theory in integrative biodiversity research. It is located in the city of Leipzig and it is a central
institution of the Leipzig University, jointly hosted by the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU), the
Friedrich Schiller University Jena and the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ). More information

NaturaConnect is an EU-funded project. The aim of NaturaConnect is to work with key decision-makers and
stakeholders to create knowledge, tools and capacity-building to support Member States in creating an
ecologically representative, resilient and well-connected network of protected areas that will contribute to
achieving the objectives of the EU Biodiversity Strategy 2030.

Tasks:
  • Develop the strategic plan to support policy makers in the implementation of the TEN-N, based on the results
of other WPs
  • Demonstrate the use of decision support tools to assess the performance of area-based conservation
measures, explore relevant data for spatial planning and simulate the establishment of new protected areas
and corridors
  • Demonstrate in case studies how the strategic plan can be implemented at different spatial scales
  • Propose a biodiversity and ecosystem services monitoring system for the network, in connection with
EuropaBON
  • Mobilization, management, and curation of all spatially explicit and non-explicit data outputs to the iDiv

Requirements:
  • Scientific university degree (Diploma/ M.Sc.) in geography and natural resource management and doctoral
degree (PhD) in environmental systems
  • Expertise in working with stakeholders in nature conservation management
  • Solid experience in the design, management, and implementation of multidisciplinary projects with multiple
partners and across multiple countries
  • Demonstrated experience in science and policy interfacing processes (e.g., IPBES Assessments)
  • Demonstrated experience in the implementation and management of biodiversity monitoring networks (e.g.,
GEO BON) and proved experience with the framework concept of the Essential Biodiversity Variables
  • Experience in managing, handling and assembling large and diverse biodiversity datasets, including in situ
and remotely sensed data, as well as experience with metadata standards (e.g., Darwin Core)
  • Very good knowledge of geospatial analysis tools and methods
  • Demonstrated experience in Red List of Species and Ecosystems assessments and Key Biodiversity Area
assessments
  • Very good level of spoken and written English and Spanish
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to lead by persuasion, build consensus and think creatively
  • Good scientific publication record
