Aquatic Ecogeography

• we are an international team investigating the impacts of global change on freshwater (particularly riverine) ecosystems. We combine community ecology, conservation biology, ecological & habitat modelling, and biogeography approaches. The position will be embedded in the project “Freshwater Megafauna Futures” funded by the Leibniz Association’s Competition. In this project, we combine basic ecological research, anthropogenic impact analysis, and the human dimension to provide a comprehensive understanding of global freshwater megafauna. There are two potential focus areas for this position, depending on the interest and expertise of the selected candidate: (a) Developing the concept of cultural importance for freshwater megafauna, addressing how human’s perception of these species can enhance freshwater conservation, e.g. through identifying flagship umbrella species. (b) Linking temporal changes of river morphology using high-resolution satellite imagery to population and distribution dynamics of freshwater megafauna.

Your key responsibilities
Develop your own research program along the project lines.
Lead at least two high-quality papers in this research area
Contribute ideas to the project development
Contribute to the project’s outreach and teaching activities
Collaborate with other team members, including supervising students, sharing skills, and helping solve problems in their area of expertise.
Your profile
You hold a PhD e.g. in conservation, environmental science, ecology or related fields of biology or geography (or equivalent), or anthropology or social sciences, or you have submitted your PhD thesis for assessment.

Essential is a strong interest in working with freshwater megafauna and in an interdisciplinary social and natural sciences context in order to understand conservation challenges and solutions.

Essential is publication experience.
Essential are very good verbal and written communication skills in English.
Desirable is experience in one or several of the following skills: geospatial data management and statistical analysis, use of R, GIS, preferably open source GIS (e.g. QGIS).

The successful candidate is expected to have strong collaborative skills to foster collaboration with other research groups at the IGB and Humboldt-Universität Berlin and other project partners; a commitment to promoting a positive and inclusive institutional culture is required.

Experience in translating conservation science to action and/or work at the science/policy interface are beneficial.
