Awi - via Umantis - Uetze - 22-01-2020 zur Vakanz

The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government. AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology, geochemistry and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.

PhD Position "Geophysical data analysis on ocean-ice sheet interaction" (m/f/d)

Background

The Amundsen Sea sector experiences presently a massive ice sheet retreat due to ocean forcing and is considered to host the most vulnerable part of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. Recent ocean drilling recovered highly resolved sedimentary records from the continental rise that allow reconstruction of past bottom-currents and their relationship to ice sheet dynamics.

The linkage of ocean-bottom current processes and West Antarctic Ice Sheet advances and retreats in the Pliocene and Miocene will be established from seismic records and from recent IODP Expedition 379 drill results in the Amundsen Sea. Such a quantified linkage will allow us to decipher how glacially driven sediment deposition balances with WAIS dynamics, in particular at the onset of and during warm periods. Using the reconstructed processes of the highly resolved Pliocene, the established characteristics will then be extended into the Miocene.

The position is part of our recruiting initiative AWI INSPIRES - INternational Science Program for Integrative Research in Earth Systems. AWI INSPIRES aims at strengthening our new research program “Changing Earth, Sustaining our Future”. Details about all open positions and the general application requirements can be found at

Tasks

You will
  • apply a core-log seismic integration and seismic attribute analysis using the drill core and physical property records from IODP Expedition 379 (Amundsen Sea) and existing multichannel seismic data;
  • use the results from core-log seismic integration, including synthetic seismograms, to correlate relevant seismic horizons and units across the continental rise, slope and shelf;
  • construct a model for variations of bottom-current dynamics and decipher its relationship with West Antarctic Ice Sheet dynamics, in particular for the Pliocene and Miocene warm times;
  • integrate data and results from other members of the international IODP Expedition 379 Science Team, and discuss results with experts on paleoclimate analyses and coupled ocean-ice-sheet modelling; and
  • present results in national/international conferences and in peer-reviewed publications.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in geophysics, physics, geology or geosciences.
  • Experience in analyzing multichannel seismic reflection data.
  • Experience or strong interest in analyzing marine sedimentary processes for paleoclimate research objectives.
  • Interest in the scientific exchange with an interdisciplinary group of international scientists.
  • High level of proficiency in written and spoken English.
