PhD Sub-millennial scale ice-ocean correlations the past 1.3 Ma

Alfred-Wegener - via Umantis - Bremerhaven - 22-01-2020 zur Vakanz

The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government. AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology, geochemistry and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.

PhD Position "Sub-millennial scale ice-ocean correlations over the past 1.3 Ma" (m/f/d)

Background

IODP Expedition 383 drilled high-resolution and continuous sedimentary sequences from the Pacific Southern Ocean to study atmosphere-ocean dynamics of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC). Sedimentation rates of several tenths of a centimeter per 1000 years will, for the first time, allow for detailed ice-ocean correlations over the past 0.8 to 1.3 Ma covering the range of the envisaged “Beyond EPICA – oldest ice” records.

The PhD project will generate high-resolution sea surface temperature (SST) records in the central South Pacific and at the southern Chilean margin that will allow us to explore in detail the orbital and sub-orbital-scale climate variability in the subantarctic ACC. We will focus on key time intervals, including important climate transitions such as the Mid-Pleistocene Revolution, beyond the present reach of ice-cores. These reconstructions will provide important benchmarks for a climate-sensitive region that are important constraints to more realistically model the impact on the ocean carbon cycle under different climate boundary conditions.

The position is part of our recruiting initiative AWI INSPIRES - INternational Science Program for Integrative Research in Earth Systems. AWI INSPIRES aims at strengthening our new research program “Changing Earth, Sustaining our Future”. Details about all open positions and the general application requirements can be found at

.

Tasks

You will
  • generate key records of sea-surface temperature (SST) from IODP sites in the central South Pacific and at the Chilean margin to ~1.3 Ma and 0.8 Ma, respectively;
  • apply different organic biomarkers for reconstructing SST (e.g., alkenones, TEX86) and potentially dust (e.g, n-alkanes);
  • closely co-operate with other research groups involved in Expediton 383 (e.g., oxygen isotope studies, dust flux, grain-size studies, paleoproductivity); and
  • collaborate with climate modellers to explore the long-term reference records for improving models

Requirements

  • A Master’s degree in geosciences (geochemistry, biogeochemistry, paleoceanography or related fields).
  • Practical knowledge in organic geochemical laboratory methods and analytical instrumentation.
  • Experience with organic biomarkers for paleo-studies would be advantageous.
  • High proficiency in both written and spoken English.
  • Readiness to participate in international collaborations, including stays abroad.
