PostDoc Antarctic Ice Sheets in warming climates

Alfred-Wegener - via Umantis - Bremerhaven - 22-01-2020 zur Vakanz

The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government. AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology, geochemistry and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.

PostDoc "Antarctic Ice Sheets in warming climates" (m/f/d)

Background

Future warming of the Southern Ocean can severely disrupt the stability of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS). A collapse of the WAIS has occurred during the last interglacial period, a period when the polar surface temperature and global sea level were higher than today.

This project will aim at quantifying processes leading to sea level rise during climate warming. This requires the inclusion of an interactive ice sheet - solid Earth component into our multi-scale Earth system model AWI-ESM. We will evaluate feedbacks and potential thresholds through model scenarios on decadal to multi-millennial time scales.

The position is part of our recruiting initiative AWI INSPIRES - INternational Science Program for Integrative Research in Earth Systems. AWI INSPIRES aims at strengthening our new research program “Changing Earth, Sustaining our Future”. Details about all open positions and the general application requirements can be found at

.

  • characterize feedbacks in the Earth system.
  • determine thresholds of the WAIS.
  • collaborate with climate modelers and geoscientists at AWI.
