Friedrich Schiller University Jena seeks to fill the following position at iDiv from 1st December 2020 onwards or at the earliest opportunity:

Scientific Programmer in Database Development (f/m/d)

Initially limited until 30 September 2021, extension until September 2024 possible and dependent upon successful renewal of DFG funding for iDiv (evaluation in spring 2021)

Background:

The German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) Halle-Jena-Leipzig is a National Research Centre funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). Its central mission is to promote theory-driven synthesis and data-driven theory in this emerging field. It is located in the city of Leipzig and jointly hosted by the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU), the Friedrich Schiller University Jena (FSU), the University of Leipzig (UL), and the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ). Within iDiv the iDiv Biodiversity Data and Code Unit (iBID) provides support on all matters related to data and code management. The scientific programmer for database development will work closely with the other members of iBID and will have a broad range of tasks related to database development and operation. The programmer will also work with the data manager and other scientists from the Jena Experiment, one of iDiv's flagship projects.

Job description:

  • Scientific Development of database instances for projects of iDiv research groups
  • Database maintenance and further development for the Jena Experiment
  • Maintenance and further development of iDiv's data portal and the underlying BEXIS2 software platform
  • Scientific Support of iDiv and sDiv groups in database integration
  • Participation in acquiring third party funding for research data management
  • Development of training and support modules on database usage for iDiv researchers.

Requirements:

  • Master's degree or equivalent in computer science or a related discipline
  • Experience in research data management
  • Strong programming skills
  • Experience in database development and operation
  • Excellent English communication skills (spoken and written)
  • Interest and ability in interdisciplinary collaboration with a diverse team of ecologists and computer scientists
  • Team player and strong organizational skills
