Subject: 2: Tracer-aided modelling of flow, solute transport and reactivity in response to dynamic hydrological conditions

Project start: 1st March 2020. Working time 65% (25.35 hours per week), limited to 3 years.

Your tasks:

Water quality models rely on an accurate representation of the time scales of solute transport and reactivity in catchments. However, these models often fail to describe long (groundwater) transit times and associated legacy contamination.

This PhD project therefore aims at improving the description of flow, solute transport and turnover in a mechanistic water quality model. The PhD student will use existing stable water isotope data and recent developments in the description of transit time distributions (TTDs) to better constrain modelled transport dynamics and subsequently improve the parameterisation of the water quality model.

The position will be based in the Department of Hydrogeology at the UFZ’s campus in Leipzig, but there will be regular exchange, especially within the PhD cohort, with other UFZ departments in Leipzig, Halle and Magdeburg as well as with our international partners.

Your profile:

  • Master’s degree in hydrology or related field
  • Experience with hydrological modelling
  • Programming skills (e.g., R, Matlab or Fortran)
  • Strong numerical and analytical skills
  • Knowledge of isotope hydrology would be an asset
  • Independent and reliable style of working
  • Proficiency in English

We offer:

  • Top level interdisciplinary research at a research centre which enjoys an excellent reputation within Germany as well as internationally
  • Excellent technical facilities
  • Work in inter-disciplinary and multinational teams
  • Excellent links to national and international research networks
