The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government. AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology, geochemistry and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.

PostDoc "Role of the West Pacific clean air pool for the global climate system" (m/f/d)

Background

The West Pacific (WP) warm pool has been identified as the major source region for stratospheric air in boreal winter. At the same time, it has the cleanest troposphere worldwide in terms of ozone, resulting in a low oxidizing capacity, which alters lifetimes of various chemicals and enhances their transport and entry into the stratosphere, thus influencing global air composition.

This leads to following questions:
  • How does the variability of tropospheric ozone in the WP influence the global climate system?
  • What is the impact of sub-seasonal (e.g. MJO), seasonal and interannual (including ENSO cycles) variations?
  • What is the oxidizing capacity of the WP?
  • How are transport processes to and from the WP and disturbances of the WP clean air pool affecting the global (stratospheric) air composition?
The position is part of our recruiting initiative AWI INSPIRES - INternational Science Program for Integrative Research in Earth Systems. AWI INSPIRES aims at strengthening our new research program “Changing Earth, Sustaining our Future”. Details about all open positions and the general application requirements can be found at

.

Tasks

You will
  • extend the Palau Observatory time series of ozone, water vapor and aerosol measurements for better characterization of seasonal and interannual variability by organizing the routine operation and performing dedicated campaigns,
  • characterize the processes that define the air in the WP (stratospheric entry point) by analyzing distinct ozone/water vapor layers, with supplementary information on aerosol content to identify different pathways to the WP,
  • quantify the oxidizing capacity of the WP in a chemical box-model approach using balloon and MaxDOAS measurements, and
  • analyze the enhanced entry of e.g. ozone depleting substances (ODS) into the stratosphere and its impact on polar ozone loss (using the AWI Lagrangian chemical transport model ATLAS).

Requirements

  • PhD or equivalent in physics or meteorology or related fields.
  • Specific knowledge of processes in the tropo- and the stratosphere and in ozone soundings.
  • Experience in coordination and organization of measurement campaigns and willingness to conduct field work at remote sites.
  • Knowledge and experience in programming languages (Python, Matlab, and/or Fortran) and in Unix/Linux operating systems.
  • Proficiency in English.
