Postdoc Coastal wetland methane emissions in response to changing sea level
The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government. AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology, geochemistry and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.
Postdoc "Coastal wetland methane emissions in response to changing sea level" (m/f/d)
Background
This position is part of the new research project “Sea-level rise, coastal wetland expansion, and proglacial lake contributions to abrupt increases in northern atmospheric CH4 during the last deglaciation,” which aims to quantify the effect of changing sea level on methane emissions from coastal wetlands in in the past using present-day analogs. This collaborative research project is funded by the Helmholtz Foundation and in collaboration with the U.S. National Science Foundation Paleo Perspectives on Climate Change (P2C2 Program).Tasks
- You will address the key question of how methane emissions from coastal zones have changed during the Holocene.
- You will generate a new synthesis dataset of potential wetland areas and wetland history in coastal zones. This syntheses dataset will draw from elevation models at the coastline, reconstructed and projected sea level curves and be combined with updated datasets of wetland types and methane fluxes to examine the potential methane emissions from wetlands in the coastal zones in the past.
- You will be embedded in the Permafrost Research Section in Potsdam and will be able to use the rich data, hardware and software resources available there.
- You will further play an active role in the organization of P2C2 project workshops and meetings of the international, collaborative group.
- You may take part in summer field work in Alaska and/or project-related training in the continental US.
Requirements
- Completed doctoral degree degree in the field of terrestrial geosciences, or paleoecology, or paleoclimatology
- Demonstrated experience working with paleoecological and paleoclimate datasets
- Demonstrated experience with analysis of large datasets, preferably with R
- Ability and willingness to participate in and potentially lead field campaigns in Alaska
- Ability and willingness to work in a team and with international groups, excellent communication skills and fluent knowledge of English
- Interest in independent research, the presentation and publication of scientific data at conferences and workshops
- Demonstrated ability and willingness to write about and publish research results in the peer-review literature
Additional skills and knowledge
- Excellent publication record and experience presenting scientific results at international level
- Prior experience with methane flux measurements
- Field work experience in the Arctic
