PhD (m/f/d) atmospheric dynamics

Alfred-Wegener - via Umantis - Potsdam - 16-01-2020 zur Vakanz

The section Physics of the Atmosphere at the Alfred Wegener Institute in Potsdam, Germany, invites applications for a PhD position (m/f/d) funded within the Transregional Collaborative Research Center TR172 on “ArctiC Amplification: Climate Relevant Atmospheric and SurfaCe Processes, and Feedback Mechanisms (AC)³” (

by the German Research Foundation (DFG, Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft). Within the TR172, AWI together with the collaboration partners (Universities of Leipzig, Cologne and Bremen, TROPOS) aim to better observe, understand, and simulate processes leading to the current drastic climate changes in the Arctic. Specifically, the title of the PhD project at AWI is:

Large-scale dynamical mechanisms of Arctic amplification
The PhD project intends to achieve a better understanding of the large-scale dynamic feedback processes that influence Arctic amplification. In particular, it will be studied whether and how large-scale heat, energy and moisture transports into the Arctic are impacted by the ocean-atmosphere variability and background state and the stratospheric variability, which is largely determined by the feedbacks between stratospheric dynamics and chemistry. To investigate the relative role of the different processes, a series of model experiments with the global atmospheric model ICON for different sea ice and ocean scenarios will be performed and analysed. To study the impact of the interactive stratospheric ozone chemistry, the set of simulations will be complemented with ICON runs including the fast interactive ozone module SWIFT, which enables mutual interactions between the ozone layer and climate in the global model ICON. These model results, together with reanalyses and CMIP6 results, will be analysed with respect to large-scale transport patterns and circulation regimes and the underlying dynamical mechanisms. Special emphasis will be put on the interaction processes between the tropo- and stratosphere.

Tasks

  • Set-up and performance of model experiments with ICON and ICON-SWIFT,
  • Quantification of the changes in the circulation regimes and the large scale transports of energy, heat and moisture to the Arctic.
  • Improved understanding of the dynamical mechanisms for the linkages between Arctic climate change and weather and climate changes in mid-latitudes.
  • New climate model simulations will be carried out and comprehensive big climate data sets from reanalyses and model simulations (including available CMIP6 data) will be analysed by means of multivariate statistical methods including machine learning approache in order to achieve thies goals

Requirements

  • Diploma/M.Sc. degree in physics, meteorology, geosciences, or related fields
  • Good skills in processing and analysing of big climate data and scientific programming (R, Python, Fortran, Matlab, or similar) are required
  • Interest in atmospheric dynamics with emphasis on troposphere-stratosphere interaction is expected
  • Good English language skills are expected
Additional skills and knowledge
  • Experience in climate modelling and working with Unix-like operating systems is an advantage
