PostDoc Global woody demography

Helmholtz-Zentrum für Umweltforschung UFZ - via Umantis - Leipzig - 07-07-2020 zur Vakanz

Working time: 100% (39 hours per week), limited to 30.09.2021 with option to extend

Your tasks:

The goal of this position is to answer synthetic research questions at the demography-conservation interface and to create an open-access database on woody plant demography. Demographic information is available in population- and community-level studies around the world. This research will quantitatively synthesize demographic data on woody plants, derive demographic metrics, such as generation time, and link demography to forest conservation. In addition, the research will use phylogenetic and trait information to estimate metrics for woody species with limited or no demographic information.

  • Collaborative planning, organization and implementation of a research project synthesizing existing demographic information on woody plants
  • Construction of a woody plant demography database
  • Development of linkages at the interface of research in woody plant demography and other related strategic projects at the UFZ and iDiv
  • Publication of scientific papers in internationally peer-reviewed journals
  • Be an active and engaged member of the scientific community at UFZ, iDiv and affiliated institutions and support the general dissemination of research results

Your profile:

  • A PhD degree related to plant population ecology, community ecology, or mathematical modeling of biological systems
  • Specialization in understanding demographic models of population or forest dynamics
  • Strong quantitative skills using R
  • Strong interest in linking demography to other research areas, such as conservation, plant functional traits, forest composition, systematics
  • Experience in designing and managing data bases is an asset
  • Strong publication record (or evidence that this will be forthcoming)
  • Experience working in an international collaborative working group
  • Fluent in English (spoken and written) with excellent communication skills, basic knowledge of German is an asset but not required
Applications should be done via our online application system and include (i) a letter of interest, (ii) a brief overview of the skills and experiences that the candidate has that could be applied to this topic (1 page), (iii) curriculum vitae, and (iv) the names and E- Mail addresses of two individuals who could provide an evaluation of the candidate upon request. Interviews are envisioned to take place at the beginning of September.
