PhD DYNAMO (m/f/x)
Subject: 1: Deciphering catchment’s transit time dynamics using event isotope signatures
Project start: 1st March 2020. Working time 65% (25.35 hours per week), limited to 3 years.Your tasks:
Flow paths and source areas of water in catchments change between average flow conditions and hydrological extreme events. However, it is not well understood how the sequence and magnitude of events may impact the transport and reactivity and, therefore, the short- and long-term fate of pollutants in catchments. In order to close this knowledge gap, your main task will be to constrain transit time distribution dynamics by using environmental tracer data (e.g., stable water isotopes) from contrasting catchments.
In close collaboration with the scientific and technical staff of the UFZ, you will provide high-resolution isotope tracer datasets and refine the event monitoring approach. You will use the isotope dataset in a parsimonious hydrological model for tracer-based modelling of dynamic transit time distributions. Furthermore, you will conduct an evaluation of transit time distribution dynamics with respect to catchment and event characteristics.
The position will be based in the Department of Catchment Hydrology at the UFZ’s campus in Halle (Saale), but there will be regular exchange, especially within the PhD cohort, with other UFZ departments in Leipzig and Magdeburg as well as with our international partners.
Your profile:
- Master’s degree in hydrology, environmental science or a related field of Natural Sciences.
- Strong numerical and analytical skills.
- Basic experience in the application of stable isotope techniques for biogeochemical or hydrologic process evaluation
- Knowledge of scripting languages like R, Python, or Matlab or other programming languages and experiences in applying field and laboratory analytical methods are a strong advantage.
- Experience with hydrological modelling is an asset
- Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team
- Proficient English language skills
We offer:
- Top level interdisciplinary research at a research centre which enjoys an excellent reputation within Germany as well as internationally
- Excellent technical facilities
- Work in inter-disciplinary and multinational teams
- Excellent links to national and international research networks
