Subject: Effects of landscape heterogeneity and crop diversity on biological pest control and pollinator health
Project start: 1st February 2020. Working time 65% (25,35 hours per week), limited to 3 years.Your tasks:
The aim of this PhD project is to disentangle the effects of landscape heterogeneity, crop diversity and land-use intensity on the health and distribution of species-dependent ecosystem services (biological pest control, pollination) within agroecosystems in Saxony (Germany). Using an interdisciplinary approach, the successful candidate will use a combination of methods such as GIS, field data collection, statistical analysis and molecular ecology to address the study’s research questions. In addition, the candidate will conduct interviews with farmers to investigate their perception of biological pest control and pollination ecosystem services. The student will work in a collaborative environment with other PhD students in the INTERCEDE research school, including joint synthesis projects.Your profile:
- Master’s degree in Ecology, Landscape Ecology, Environmental Sciences, Agriculture or related disciplines
- Experience in conducting fieldwork, GIS and in the statistical software R (advantageous)
- Interest in understanding farmers motivations for land management
- Experience in molecular ecology is beneficial
- Motivation to work in an interdisciplinary environment together with social and natural scientists
- Proficient English and German language skills
