Thesis Paleo-genetics and ecology

Climate change affects species’ range dynamics

, eventually resulting in certain biodiversity patterns in space and time. Because of amplified arctic warming, northern boreal ecosystems experience stronger climate change than low latitude ecosystems. Accordingly,

biodiversity in the northern ecosystems is expected to change

at an exceptional pace under current global warming. However, the links between climate, species composition and species richness are largely unknown in the boreal ecosystems.

The
study of past vegetation dynamics during transitions between glacial and interglacial
might help us to better understand and predict their response to a changing climate in the future. The relatively new sedimentary
ancient DNA
(sedaDNA)
metabarcoding
method can be used to investigate past vegetation changes.
In that optic, we want to
reconstruct past vegetation during the last ~50,000yrs in Siberia
with the investigation of metabarcoding results from DNA extracted from siberian lake sediments.

Tasks

  • Laboratory work: DNA extraction and concentration, PCRs & preparation for DNA sequencing.
  • Bioinformatics: data filtering, taxonomic assignment.
  • Statistics: measure of richness and diversity indexes

Requirements

  • We are looking for enthusiastic young researchers, who enjoy working in a team and have good communication skills.
  • Some previous laboratory experience and basic knowledge of genetics and molecular biology.
  • Interest in ecology and genetics. Interest in learning genetics laboratory techniques and bioinformatics tools.
