PhD (m/f/d) ocean modelling on unstructured grids
The aim of the PhD project is to investigate the effect of mesoscale atmospheric processes on the Antarctic sea ice and the ocean circulation around Antarctica with the aid of high-resolution model simulations. As a basis global climate model simulations exist which have been performed for CMIP6 (Coupled Model Intercomparison Project) and for the next assessment report of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change).
These simulations will be used at the University of Trier to drive atmospheric regional climate simulations for Antarctica for present-day and future climate.
The PhD project is funded by the DFG (Deutsche ForschungsGemeinschaft: German Research Society) under the joint project with the University of Trier REDOCCA: REgional high-resolution DOwnscaling of Climate Change in the Antarctic.
Tasks
- The incumbent will use the data from the global and regional climate simulations to perform and evaluate time slice experiments for present-day and future ocean climate
) in a high horizontal
resolution of up to 3 km around Antarctica.
- The input data for the ocean model have to be combined from the global and regional atmosphere simulation data.
Requirements
- Masters in oceanography, meteorology, environmental sciences, geosciences, physics, mathematics or computer sciences
Additional advantageous knowledge and skills
- Shell script programming, fortran programming, knowledge about climate models
