PostDoc Reference SST records of the Pacific Southern Ocean for the past 8 Ma
The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government. AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology, geochemistry and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.
PostDoc "Reference SST records of the Pacific Southern Ocean for the past 8 Ma" (m/f/d)
Background
IODP Expedition 383 drilled, for the first time, long (late Miocene to recent) and continuous sedimentary sequences from the Pacific Southern Ocean to study atmosphere-ocean dynamics of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) in the Pacific, and their implications for regional and global climate and atmospheric CO2
.
This Postdoc project will generate long paleoceanographic reference records that will allow us to explore in detail the glacial–interglacial changes and longer-term climate evolution in the subantarctic ACC. We will focus on key records of sea surface temperatures and dust, continuously reaching back to the late Miocene. The establishment of these reference time series requires close cooperation between international working groups to ensure the merging of results and the agreement on certain measuring methods. These reconstructions will provide benchmarks for a climate-sensitive region and important constraints to more realistically model the impact on the ocean carbon cycle under different climate boundary conditions.
The position is part of our recruiting initiative AWI INSPIRES - INternational Science Program for Integrative Research in Earth Systems. AWI INSPIRES aims at strengthening our new research program “Changing Earth, Sustaining our Future”. Details about all open positions and the general application requirements can be found at

Tasks
You will- generate key records of sea-surface temperature (SST) and dust, back to the Miocene in the Pacific Southern Ocean.
- apply different organic biomarkers for reconstructing SST (e.g., alkenones, GDGTs) and dust supply (e.g, n-alkanes).
- closely cooperate with other research groups involved in Expedition 383 and organize the merging of results and the agreement on certain measuring methods.
- collaborate with climate modelers to explore the long-term reference records for improving models.
Requirements
- PhD degree in geosciences (geochemistry, biogeochemistry, paleoceanography or related fields).
- Experience in working with international working groups and carrying out own projects is desirable.
- Practical knowledge in organic geochemical laboratory methods and analytical instrumentation.
- Experience with organic biomarkers for paleo-studies.
- Excellent English language skills, both written and spoken.
- Readiness to participate in international collaborations including stays abroad.
