Geospatial Data Scientist
This position is part of the Permafrost Pilot Service in the EU Arctic Passion project and will be associated with additional ESA projects (ESA CCI+ Permafrost, ESA EO4PAC) with a permafrost focus. The pilot service aims to provide a data and visualization portal for existing remote sensing products showing permafrost disturbance trends and modelled permafrost ground temperature and active layer datasets on different spatial scales from the panarctic to the local level. A key aspect will be the enhancement of usefulness of these science products for a broad user and stakeholder base in Arctic communities and research stations. The position requires experience in handling and visualization of large remote sensing datasets and their implementation in online data portals (e.g. WebGIS, websites, data catalogues such as the APGC). The position requires experience in design and creativity to facilitate knowledge transfer to various stakeholders in northern indigenous and local communities, Arctic research stations, and international organizations interested in permafrost change.
The data scientist will lead the development of the data portal and design all aspects of the data visualization, manage an efficient and suitable transfer of the data products to the targeted users and stakeholders, address their feedback to the service, and interact with several other partners in the Arctic Passion consortium to maximize the usability of the permafrost pilot service. You will have the opportunity to work on further data products that could be suitable for integration in the data portal of the Permafrost Pilot Service.
Tasks
Specifically, the tasks of this position are to:- Lead the development and integration of a new visualization data portal for remote sensing datasets relevant for the permafrost pilot service
- Manage stakeholders interactions with user groups of the data portal and permafrost disturbance data products hosted in the Arctic Passion Permafrost Pilot Service
- Broaden the usability of the data portal for implementation of additional relevant remote sensing products resulting from ESA projects and other efforts with a focus on enhancing usefulness for northern communities and Arctic Stations
- You will be embedded in the Permafrost Research Section in Potsdam and will be able to use the rich data, hardware and software resources available there. The data scientist will further play an active role in the organization of workshops and meetings of international, collaborative groups internal to the project and within the broader research community.
Requirements
- Completed MSc degree in the field of geospatial sciences, geography, geoinformatics, or other closely related field
- Demonstrated experience in handling and visualizing large geospatial datasets, preferably remote sensing datasets and maps
- Demonstrated experience in analysis of spatial and remote sensing datasets
- Demonstrated experience with data vizualization, conceptual development/design of data catalogues, or data portals
- Experience with knowledge transfer and stakeholder interactions, preferrably in the Arctic
- Ability and willingness to work in a team and with international groups
- Excellent communication skills, coordination and organizational skills, and fluent knowledge of English
- Experience in the presentation and publication of data vizualizations at conferences and workshops
- Interest in independent research and analysis of geospatial data; continued development of core datasets
- Publication record and experience presenting scientific results at international level
- Ability and willingness to write about and publish research results in the peer-review literature
- Prior experience with permafrost datasets
- German language knowledge is a plus
