Intern (m/w/d) Investigation and mapping of the concepts of Ecosystem health’

Helmholtz-Zentrum für Umweltforschung UFZ - via Umantis - Leipzig - 03-02-2020 zur Vakanz

The Department Ecosystem Service is offering an internship (compulsory internship Bachelor/ Master student only) for a of minimum 6 weeks and a maximum of 6 month. Earliest starting point mid April/ May.

Description of the internship project:

The approaches in the line of ‘One Health’ movement are claiming to foster a more holistic approach to health. Mainly used by Wildlife conservation scientists and public health veterinarians at the beginning, this term is now widely used within the life science communities. One Health promotes considering Human, Animal and Environmental Health as three axes of a whole. In this line, the concepts of ‘Environmental health’, ‘Ecosystem Health’ and‘ EcoHealth’ have been developed to describe the environmental part of the triptych. The goal of this internship will be to identify the definitions and concepts associated with the use of these terms related to environmental and ecological health in the scientific literature. Is there a convergence or a divergence in the use of those terms? Do we find the same definitions among the different disciplines that mobilise it?

How to define and make visible the health of an ecosystem?
This internship will map the definitions and approaches of ‘Ecosystem Health’ among the scientific communities. It will identify the criteria and indicators for the evaluation of the health of an (agro)ecosystem. To do so the intern will conduct a literature review, using a bibliometric methodology.

The intern will have to be independent in the use of literature review tools, be curious about the works done in numerous disciplinary fields. The results of this research will be used for the PhD project, and can potentially be used on a scientific paper on the interface between One Health and ecology.

Your tasks:

  • Identify the terms used to describe the Environmental health in a broad sense, and the associated definitions for each term;
  • Explicit the convergence and divergence in the meaning and scope of each term related to environmental health within the different disciplines,
  • Use bibliometric tools to scope the frequency, and sources using the different terms and associated concepts within the scientific literature.

Your profile:

  • Ecology, human or animal health, or social science background
  • Ease and autonomy in the conduct of a systematic literature review
  • Thoroughness and precision in the use of scientific terms
  • Curiosity for new scientific fields
  • Fluency in scientific English, another language would be appreciated

We offer:

  • A close and good care
