limate (SO-CHIC).
The position addresses the management and scientific integration of data from this and related programs.
The overall objective of SO-CHIC is to understand and quantify variability of heat and carbon budgets in the Southern Ocean. The position offered here shall contribute to the description and understanding of the dynamics of dense water formation, transformation and export in the Weddell Sea. This will be approached through synthesizing existing observations. In order to understand the distinct roles that dense water formation on the shelves versus along-plume modification play for dense water export we will differentiate the contributions from the source water (HSSW, ISW) and entrained deep waters along the continental slope into the bottom water plume.

Tasks

  • combine the observations in the bottom water plume with time series in - the source areas of dense waters and with time series representing bottom water export properties downstream.
  • subsequently study the along-stream connectivity of the interannual to decadal changes in the properties of the dense water by following property anomalies (density, transport, heat and salt anomalies) along the continental slope from the source regions to the export gateways.
  • decipher whether changes in the export properties (e.g. in Orkney Passage) are related to changes in source water properties (possibly driven by disintegration of Larsen C ice shelf, slope front position, etc.) or due to changes in the modification processes (e.g. warming of ambient waters, changes in the wind field
  • lead and contribute to publications of your results in peer-reviewed journals

Requirements

  • You should be strongly motivated and hold a PhD degree in physical oceanography or related fields.
  • extensive experience in the analysis of sensor-based, marine data.
  • A strong background in fluid dynamics is expected.
  • A strong background in high-level programming (preferably MATLAB) is required.
  • a competitive publication record though first-author publications.
  • openess to interact with an interdisciplinary and international science community with the SO-CHIC
  • willingness to participate in research expeditions.
  • Very good communication skills in English - both written and oral – are mandatory.
