Hifmb - via Umantis - Oldenburg - 19-02-2020 zur Vakanz

The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government. AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology, geochemistry and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.

PhD Position "Dynamics of complex ecological communities" (m/f/d)

Background

The Biodiversity Theory Group is a new lab at the Helmholtz Institute for Functional Marine Biodiversity in Oldenburg. The lab focuses on the development of new mathematical and computational approaches to the diversity of species in ecological systems. We seek to make transformative progress by using ideas from Statistical Physics, Nonlinear Dynamics, Networks and Data Science to describe ecological systems in new ways.

Tasks

You will
  • develop and apply modeling approaches for ecological communities, with particular focus on marine microbes. The structure and dynamics of microbial communities is an emerging hot topic that radically changes how we think about biology.
  • contribute to this topic by studying marine communities where models can be linked to data from HIFMB local partner labs. To understand how such communities function new modeling approaches are necessary, which will draw heavily on cutting edge concepts from nonlinear dynamics and network science.
  • develop such modelling approaches and apply them to understand how diversity of species in communities emerges, functions and fails. The overarching aim of this work will be understand the consequences of the microbial diversity in the oceans and its response to global change.

Requirements

  • Master level (or equivalent) qualification in Biology, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science or related fields.
  • Solid command of English language in speech and writing.

Additional skills and knowledge

  • Demonstrable interest in ecological systems.
  • Previous experience in mathematical modeling and programming
